Facebook has announced that it is using Artificial Intelligence, among other things, to help it combat terrorists from making use of its platform to encourage its agendas.
This comes as Facebook is facing increasing pressure from governmental officials to be able to detect and prevent terrorist groups from spreading harmful content on the platform.
This is a step up from Facebook’s previous method of relying on its users to report or flag harmful content, which the company would later consider removing.
“Already, the majority of accounts we remove for terrorism we find ourselves.” the company said. “Although our use of AI against terrorism is fairly recent, it’s already changing the ways we keep potential terrorist propaganda and accounts off Facebook.”
Facebook said that it still relies on reports of “terrorism posts” in order to review and remove and it does so with urgency. It also said that on top of this, if it finds proof of harm, it immediately notifies authorities.
The Global Policy Management Director of Facebook, Monika Bickert said:
“Because we don’t want terrorists to have a place anywhere in the family of Facebook apps, we have begun work on systems to enable us to take action against terrorist accounts across all our platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram. Given the limited data some of our apps collect as part of their service, the ability to share data across the whole family is indispensable to our efforts to keep all our platforms safe,”
Other Methods Used
Facebook has said that it also uses other methods to monitor “terrorist” content” on its platform. One of these methods is “image-matching technology.”
This method keeps a log of photos and videos known to involve terrorist content in order to ensure it doesn’t show up again elsewhere.
Another method applies “machine learning algorithms” to look for language patterns among terrorist propaganda, in order to be able to notice such content in statuses etc. Those would help the company remove this content quicker and more efficiently.
