Nintendo has finally unveiled the much anticipated Switch. The console, which is set to hit the shelves at the beginning of March, is due to retail for $299.99. Alternating between a home and mobile gaming device, it has been named because of its versatility.
With the Switch, Nintendo hopes to make up some ground lost to rivals including Playstation and Xbox. The device was first unveiled last year, and now full details have been revealed. However, the console is more expensive than many people were expecting. So, even though Nintendo has released details of its latest piece of technology, shares in the Japanese firm have actually dropped by five per cent. Video gaming experts have commented about the high price point.
It is Nintendo’s first foray back into the home video game world since its Wii U. As well as being able to be played at home like any other console, there is also a smaller, removable screen so that it can be used as a mobile device while out and about.
A number of popular games will be available for the new device, including the next installment in the Legend of Zelda series, as well as new titles Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. However, third party games including Minecraft and Fifa will also be available for the console.
Ninendo’s president Tatsumi Kimishima described the console as a totally new type of home gaming system offering a number of different play modes. The battery life of the handheld device is estimated to be between two and half and six and a half hours, depending on the game being played. The package also includes a paid online service. Details about that are expected to be released at a later date. Nintendo suffered disappointing sales of its Wii U and the 3DS handheld consoles and is hoping the Switch will turn around its fortunes.
